The digital has, for better or for worse, succeeded in intruding upon all aspects of human life, yet its effects on art and the artist remain underexplored. One Dot psd investigates the visual, textural, physical and mental implications of simultaneous digital and analog artistic creation, fostering a conversation between modern technologies and the venerable technique of oil painting while redefining the tradition of abstract painting.
One Dot psd also stems from a stream of consciousness, allowing random repetitions and disruptions in the creative process. One continuously evolving file, one.psd – constituting over 200 hours of digital painting– is screencaptured at specific times. Contemporary tools enable prolificity by speeding up the creative act, a reflection of the frenetic pace of contemporary life, an update and upgrade of Warholian reiterations. The digital depletes physical texture and materiality; the mouse and the tablet replace the pencil and the bruh; the canvas's grain and the paint crevices are invisible. Yet other kinds of textures, albeit not palpable, emerge through brush making, cloning, 3d brushes, texture scanning, and filter building. The artist's hand gestures are transformed and so is his relationship to his work. He can be as slow, as fast, as simple, as complex as desired to create a work infinitely reproducible yet uniquely generated by an algorithm. Yet, all slows down when the artist brandishes his brush.
Having given himself up to the algorithm, he now controls it, by deciding which frame is deemed worth carefully reproducing. Transcending the limitations of the screen, the artist seizes the pattern to reproduce and is now able to focus on detail rather than the bigger scheme. Mindfulness replaces the machine, and timelessness overtakes the impermanent digital image – its ordered chaos transformed into a creation outside time, neither ancestral nor contemporary nor futuristic. The painter enters his safe mode, his safe zone, from which he will emerge to infiltrate the white cube.
